Frank Connelly

Obituary of Frank X. Connelly

Frank was born in New York City and grew up in the construction business working for his dad. He was a good athlete and played baseball, football and lacrosse. He played football at Notre Dame under Knute Rockne until Knute's untimely death. He finished his degree in engineering at Union College where he also played both varsity football and lacrosse. He joined the cavalry in the '30's, and worked at Kodak Park during the depression where he met and later married Millie. He served in the Navy after Pearl Harbor and was a member of the construction battalion (CB'S) in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Rochester NY where he again entered into the construction business and had his own contracting company until the advent of the Korean War. He was called to serve in the Navy again and as a Lt. Commander moved his family to Carmel California. He was the resident officer in charge of construction on the Naval postgraduate school in Monterey. He always exhibited energy, tenacity and charisma. In any of his endeavors and despite economic setbacks never let the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" get in his way. He was a project manager for several large contractors and ran his own civil engineering firm and the Frank X Connelly construction company until health problems forced him out of the building business. As an aspiring artist, he took up painting where he did well but his heart was still in construction. He asked God for one more job and was "rewarded " by becoming the project manager for the restoration of St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown San Jose.
