Obituary of Daniel Louis Maloney

Daniel Louis Maloney

May 21, 1958 to April 19, 2021. Our beloved Dan passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home on April 19th. Dan was a devoted son, partner, brother, uncle, great-uncle, Godfather, and friend. He is preceded in death by his partner Frank Flores and his parents Kevin and Lois Maloney. Dan is survived by his six siblings, 12 nieces/nephews, 7 great nieces/nephews, a multitude of extended family and friends, and his cherished cat Charlotte.

His family and friends knew Dan as a loving, thoughtful, caring person. He always remembered special occasions of both friends and family with a card and personal note. He was wickedly funny and often the life of the party. Dan, still Danny to some of us, was also known to family as “Uncle Monkey” and had a reputation for sending pink flamingos to his loved ones. He was an excellent cook, bringing delicious dishes to gatherings. He was also a talented artist and his handcrafted gifts are treasured by all.

A Theatre Arts major from Santa Clara University, Dan worked professionally as an actor for over three decades and could be seen on stage at a number of Bay Area theaters including San Jose Stage, San Jose Repertory Theatre, and the Mayer Theatre at SCU. Dan’s voice could be heard on the California Legacy Project doing dramatic readings from California history and literature. With a great sense of humor, he was quick to bring levity to any situation and had an infamous deadpan delivery. Dan’s passion was the theater and he made regular trips to New York to see the latest Broadway shows and attend shows and receptions at the Signature Theater Company. He was a regular at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland to watch good friends perform.

Dan was a 27-year employee of Santa Clara University, his colleagues would agree that he made work fun. Dan cherished working at SCU and Media Services and forged lasting relationships across campus.

Gifts can be made to the Santa Clara University Theater Department in memory of Dan. Gifts can be made online indicating that they are in memory of Dan at https://www.scu.edu/giving/theatre or they can be mailed to SCU Development, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA  95053-1400, again with an indication that it is in memory of Dan and for the SCU Theater Department.

A Celebration of Dan’s life will be held at the University in the fall; details of the time and location will be updated to this site.
