Obituary of Dr. Alice Chan Doerfler
Dr. Alice Chan Doerfler passed on June 28, 2020 after a long fight against cancer. Alice was born as CHAN Wai Chun 陳慧珍 in Hong Kong on February 7, 1936 to TSANG Hing Tai 曾慶娣 and CHAN Yuen Fong 陳恩芳. Alice had two brothers, Tim and Por, and a sister King.
As a child Alice was sent to Guangdong in mainland China during World War II; she later returned to Hong Kong. She went on to attend the Hong Kong Pui Ching Middle School 香港培正中學 and met many friends with whom she remained close throughout her life.
Being a strong, brilliant, and adventurous person, she left Hong Kong and earned her M.D. in Japan. Upon completion of her degree she left Japan and met her husband of over 53 years, George Doerfler, during the voyage to America.
Alice lived the American Dream. Once in the U.S. she worked as a Medical Doctor at the Columbia and Stanford Hospitals. Together with her husband they started a family and built the successful auto parts imports business, World Wide Trading Company. She enjoyed getting together with friends for great food (of course Chinese!), playing golf, seeing her grandchildren, and traveling all the corners of the world. Through her travels she eventually acquired over 7 languages.
Throughout her life Alice helped many through her mentoring and generosity.
Alice is survived by her husband George, daughter Bernice, son Owen, grandchildren Noah, Felix, and Alana, and her brother Por.
