Obituary of David Carl Grometer
Dave Grometer passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2019 at the age of 89. He was born in 1930 to George and Hulda Grometer and lived his youthful years in Tulsa, Oklahoma until 1942 when the family moved to first Longmont and then Boulder, Colorado. In his youth, Dave enjoyed taking memorable vacations each summer visiting throughout the Midwest and western United States including favorite National Parks where he developed a love for nature and passion for fishing.
Following high school graduation in Boulder, he began what he believed would lead to an emerging career, raising registered Hereford cattle east of town on 40 acres of leased pasture. However, he soon thereafter found himself enlisting for a 4-year stint in the U.S. Air Force in January 1951 rather than entering via the draft. His enlistment led him through many excellent electronic schools back East with subsequent ground and airborne radar maintenance assignments at Cape Canaveral, Florida, a year-long tour south of Incheon, Korea during the Korean War and an eventual discharge after his last tour of duty at McClellan AFB, California.
Following his Air Force discharge and a newfound appreciation for electronics, Dave used the GI Bill to attend Engineering school at Pasadena City College and then return to Boulder where he graduated from Colorado University with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his new career at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company where he’d work as a Design and Systems Engineer for the next 40 years.
Once settled in California, Dave met and married his lovely wife, Judy, and raised three children, Scott, Brent and Karen. Dave was a wonderful father, always sharing his love for the outdoors with his family, traveling each summer to their favorite vacation spot, Eagle Lake, and continuing the tradition of sharing his appreciation of our National Parks. Dave was actively involved in Boy and Girl Scouts, YMCA programs, high school music bands, and numerous sporting activities with all three of his children.
In retirement, Dave enjoyed pursuing his love for hunting and fishing with friends and family and his passion for volunteer work. In addition to volunteering more than 2000 hours driving for El Camino Hospital’s Auxiliary Road Runner’s Program, he lovingly and energetically immersed himself in the Los Altos United Methodist Church Outreach Council. Here he dedicated countless hours to the Alpha Omega Homeless Services Program in close coordination with the Community Services Agency.
Dave’s passing was preceded by his beloved daughter, Karen, his brother, Fred and his parents, George and Hulda. He is survived by his loving wife Judy, dear sons Scott and Brent, his wonderful sister, Maryann, and his extended family.
