Obituary of Saint Elmo Emmanuel Perera
Obituary for Saint Elmo E. Perera
Saint Elmo Emmanuel Perera, aged 85, of Cupertino, California peacefully transitioned to heaven on Saturday, July 20th, 2019 at Kaiser Santa Clara after a brief illness. Elmo was surrounded by his loved ones as he went home to be with Jesus.
Elmo was born on December 27th, 1933 in Sri Lanka to Ernest C. Perera and Margret E. Perera (née Rekawa), who preceded him in death. He grew up with two brothers and one sister who preceded him in death: Anthony, Peter, Rita/Dolly Wickramasekera, and one living sister: Marie Edirisinghe (Sumith), with whom he had many mischievous childhood adventures.
Elmo moved to the United States in the early 1970s in pursuit of better life opportunities. He formed many wonderful friendships while living in Indiana, Illinois, and finally in California during his retirement years. Elmo was born Catholic, however, became a born-again Christian after he came to the United States. Elmo's entire life thereafter was dedicated to living an exemplary Christian life. Elmo was an amazing servant of God, honoring Christ in everything he did and said. Elmo had written his life motto in the Bible he used since 1983, "Because of His Love for me, I strive to walk worthy of Him, reflecting His Likeness in my words and deeds."
Elmo was an adoring and dedicated husband to Chandani (Marie) Mathew-Perera, whom he married in 1995 while she was a widow with two young daughters. He deeply loved his two step-daughters, Ruth and Rebecca Mathew, as his own and took great care of them. Besides God and His Service, Elmo's life was dedicated to caring for Chandani and his two girls. He worked really hard to provide for them, and he thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world with them.
Elmo was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews including Dolly’s children Tony, Harry, Maude, Therese, Malcolm, Peter, Marie, and Christine living in USA and those living in Sri Lanka. He also leaves behind his loving honorary family whose lives were intertwined with his for over sixty years: the family of Joyce and Ignatius Fernando. Elmo also had many friends for whom he cared and prayed.
Elmo was humble, kind, loving, helpful, and so supportive to all. He loved and helped everyone he met without an expectation of reciprocity, recognition, or reward. He greatly contributed to his community through volunteerism and donations. He impacted many lives during his time on earth. We will all miss him tremendously; however, we rejoice with him that he finally went home to heaven for which he looked forward.
Public viewing will be on Saturday, July 27th from 9:30 to 11:30 am at Spangler Chapel, 399 S San Antonio Rd, Los Altos, CA 94022. Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 am at the same place.
A celebration luncheon will follow the memorial service at the Bridges Community Church, Family Center, 625 Magdalena Ave, Los Altos, CA 94024.
Elmo will be cremated and ashes will be buried on August 8th from 9:00 to 10:00 am at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos, CA 940244
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to 2 places that were dear to Elmo’s heart: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which Elmo supported for close to 40 years, and/or your local food pantry, which represents one of the many community causes Elmo supported.
