Obituary of Diane Hughey

Diane Marie Hughey, 61,  long term resident of Sunnyvale, California, passed away at home surrounded by her family January 23, 2018. Diane displayed incredible strength and fortitude in her long fight with cancer.

Diane was born in Fontana, California as the first child to Lloyd and Ann Braithwaite on September 24, 1956. Living most of her life in the Bay Area, Diane was an eager learner and excelled in school. She graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1974.

No one was a stranger to Diane! She made friends everywhere she went, graciously accepting everyone without judgement. As life long friend of Diane’s said, “Being with Diane meant you knew you would have a good time and Diane would talk enough for both of us. You wouldn’t have to say anything.” Diane was energetic and adventurous, she lived every moment to the fullest.

Diane met Robert A. Hughey in 1980.  They quickly found common interests, love, and were married. Together they had two children, Danielle and Richard. Her family and children became the center of her universe.  Diane also had two step sons, Codey and Nicholas. She chose to be a stay-at-home mom and babysit her two sons to be a part of their lives.  Diane volunteered in her children’s school classrooms, and enrolled them in several activities and programs to develop their interests in the sports and the arts.

Diane loved the theatre, perhaps inherited from her grandmother Inez, who performed in Vaudeville as a piano player and dancer.  She attended numerous live theatre performances in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and London.

When she wasn’t attending performances, Diane was helping her children in local theatre companies for several years.  As a parent volunteer, she was willing to do whatever job needed to be done to ensure a strong production.

Diane earned a degree in Business from Western Michigan University. She continued her education by achieving a certification in Technical Writing.  She worked as a telecommunications manager and marketing manager for IBM/Rolm and later for Siemens for many years.  She enjoyed her work as a professional business woman and loved the camaraderie among her colleagues.  For Diane however, family always came first so when Siemens requested she transfer to Florida, she declined and moved to Arizona to be near her grandchildren. Diane continued working by waitressing, where she awarded recognitions for friendly repertoire with customers.

To say Diane was a sports fanatic is an understatement.  Everyone knew that Diane was an avid fan.  Her San Francisco Giants and 49er’s were very important to her and she had the wardrobe and accessories to prove it.  She attended games from Candlestick to the AT & T Park, and even saw a few Spring Training games in Arizona.

Diane loved to travel.  She enjoyed being with her grandchildren anywhere, but especially in Disneyland.  She generously planned and took her family members on many tours including several trips to Hawaii, Mexico, the Carribbean, and Europe. Diane also enjoyed the relaxing nature of traveling on cruises.  She met her goal a few times by earning the prestigious “Ship on a Stick” award for successfully winning trivia contests.

Diane is survived by her husband, Robert Hughey of Sunnyvale, daughter, Danielle (Adam) Rathert of Santa Cruz, stepsons Codey Hughey of Santa Clara, Nick (Gail) Hughey of San Jose, sister Susan (Dan) Kallewaard of Vicksburg, Michigan, mother Ann Smouse of Grass Valley, in-laws Richard & Patricia Hughey, Sunnyvale, grandchildren Aidan & Ava Rathert, Samantha and Brandon Hughey, niece Hannah (David) Kallewaard-Lum of Santa Clara, and cousin Carla Presser of San Jose.  She is preceded in death by her father, Lloyd M. Braithwaite, and son, Richard Lloyd Hughey.

Diane will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and everyone that knew her.

Visitation with the family will be at Spangler Chapel, 399 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos, on Monday, January 29, from 4:30-8:30 pm.  Memorial service will also be at Spangler Chapel on Tuesday, January 30, at 10 am with Reverend Sandy A. Lawson officiating. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven, 22555 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos.

Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 17066, Baltimore, MD 21297, or St. Jude Hospital for Children's Research, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to Vitas Hospice.
