Estela Flores Cardenas

Estela Flores Cardenas died peacefully on March 6, 2018 in Mountain View, CA at the age of 89.

Estela is survived by her son, Antonio (Tony) Jose Cardenas of Sunnyvale, CA. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jesse, Leo, Gilbert and Johnny, and by her sisters, Angela and Hortencia.

Estela’s life was tried and tested, as a loving follower of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Our Lord tested her love for her family time and time again, and Estela met the challenge each and every single time.

Living in Texas at the time of the Great War, when her brother Leo left for war in the Pacific Theater, the family packed up and moved to California settling in Mountain View, CA. At an early age, Estela assisted her mother in setting up the new household, along with her sisters and brothers and although they were limited with means, they were together as a family. Later, when they purchased their first home, it was a collective effort with Estela pitching in as much as she could to help the family set firm roots in the Bay Area. When her brothers left the family home to establish their own homes, Estela stayed with her mother, brothers Gilbert and Johnny and sisters Angela and Hortencia. After her sister, Hortencia had her first baby girl, Mary Ellen, Estela helped her sister to care for and raise Mary Ellen.  And when her own son, Tony, came along, both children were raised together by the family.  From time to time, family would come to Estela and her sisters and ask for help, and help would be provided, as best as it could be. The family always worked and lived together and they were happy to have each other.

Working at the Cannery down the street from their family home on Charles Street, Estela would walk with her sisters and brother Gilbert to work – never wanting to own a car of her own because she was scared of driving.  She tried it once and said “it’s not for me.”

After many years at the Cannery, Estela retired and thought her time of raising kids and working was over, but then tragedy struck the family with the passing of Mary Ellen, and her five kids were left parentless. Estela, along with her sisters, Angela and Hortencia were asked to step in and raise the five kids. Estela went back to work, along with her sister Hortencia to earn money and put food on the table and take care of all the needs of the kids. Estela taught the kids right and wrong and tried to pass along our family traditions. She pushed the kids to go to school, work hard and learn to be good people – she also tried to instill Christ into their lives – dragging them along to mass and even catching a few sleeping in the pews! She had each child baptized and take their first communion, never prouder then when she saw them at church loving our Lord.

In all the years, Estela always found time for her passion, gardening and worshipping our Lord. She would spend countless hours on Saturday, trimming bushes and plants, picking oranges, apples and lemons, planting new flowers and pruning the trees – it gave her solace until she could reach Sunday to worship our Lord in His house. For many years, her best friend Trini Flores would give her a ride to Saint Martin Church to attend mass, and when Trini was unable to provide a lift, Estela would walk the five miles to church.

Estela is loved and will be missed.  She was never one to be big on emotions but in her quiet look, you knew she loved you and she never let you forget that she worked hard to provide for her family. If you knew Estela, then you were part of her family and you were loved. Our beloved Estela is now resting with our Lord, her test is over, it’s her time to rest, may she always smile down upon us.
